Statuary As a Staple of Classic Art in Archaic Greece

Statuary Staple Classic Art Archaic Greece 366829482.jpg Statuary As a Staple of Classic Art in Archaic Greece Archaic Greeks were known for creating the first freestanding statuary; up until then, most carvings were made out of walls and pillars as reliefs. Kouros figures, statues of young, good-looking male or female (kore) Greeks, made up the majority of the sculptures. The kouroi, viewed as by the Greeks to represent beauty, had one foot extended out of a strict forward-facing posture and the male statues were regularly unclothed, with a compelling, sturdy physique. Life-sized versions of the kouroi appeared beginning in 650 BC. The Archaic period was turbulent for the Greeks as they progressed into more refined forms of government and art, and acquired more information about the peoples and cultures outside of Greece. The Arcadian conflicts, the Spartan penetration of Samos, and other wars between city-states are good examples of the types of clashes that emerged commonly, which is consistent with other times of historical transformation.
