Water Delivery Solutions in Ancient Rome

Water Delivery Solutions in Ancient RomeWater Delivery Solutions Ancient Rome 0808692190897550271.jpg Rome’s very first raised aqueduct, Aqua Anio Vetus, was built in 273 BC; before that, residents living at higher elevations had to rely on natural creeks for their water. When aqueducts or springs weren’t available, people living at raised elevations turned to water removed from underground or rainwater, which was made possible by wells and cisterns. In the very early 16th century, the city began to use the water that flowed below ground through Acqua Vergine to deliver drinking water to Pincian Hill. Through its original construction, pozzi (or manholes) were placed at set intervals along the aqueduct’s channel. Even though they were originally developed to make it possible to support the aqueduct, Cardinal Marcello Crescenzi began using the manholes to gather water from the channel, opening when he acquired the property in 1543. He didn’t get a sufficient quantity of water from the cistern that he had manufactured on his property to gather rainwater. That is when he made a decision to create an access point to the aqueduct that ran directly below his residence.

The History of Wall Fountains

The History of Wall FountainsHistory Wall Fountains 169898535.jpg Himself a learned man, Pope Nicholas V led the Roman Catholic Church from 1397 till 1455 and was responsible for the translation of hundreds of ancient texts from their original Greek into Latin. In order to make Rome worthy of being the capital of the Christian world, the Pope decided to enhance the beauty of the city. In 1453 the Pope commissioned the reconstruction of the Aqua Vergine, an historic Roman aqueduct which had carried fresh drinking water into the city from eight miles away. A mostra, a monumental commemorative fountain constructed by ancient Romans to mark the point of arrival of an aqueduct, was a tradition which was restored by Nicholas V. The Trevi Fountain now occupies the area previously filled with a wall fountain crafted by Leon Battista Albert, an architect employed by the Pope. The aqueduct he had reconditioned included modifications and extensions which eventually allowed it to supply water to the Trevi Fountain as well as the renowned baroque fountains in the Piazza del Popolo and the Piazza Navona.
