Agrippa's Amazing, but Mostly Forgotten Water-Lifting Mechanism

Agrippa's Amazing, but Mostly Forgotten Water-Lifting Mechanism Though the device developed by Agrippa for lifting water earned the respect of Andrea Bacci in 1588, it seemed to disappear not very long thereafter. Just years later, in 1592, the earliest contemporary Roman conduit, the Acqua Felice, was connected to the Medici’s villa, perhaps making the product obsolete. The simpler account is that it was ignored about when Ferdinando left for Florence in 1588, following the death of his brother Francesco di Medici, to change his status as cardinal for one as the Grand Duke of Tuscany. #P#Agrippa's Amazing, Mostly Forgotten Water-Lifting Mechanism 153886274525950.jpg Renaissance gardens of the later part of the 16th century were home to works like musical water features, scenographic water displays and water caprices (giochi d’acqua), but these were not filled with water in ways which violated the force of gravity itself.

Fundamentals of Hydrostatics

Fundamentals of Hydrostatics From its housing vessel to other components it comes in contact with, liquid in equilibrium exerts force on everything it meets. The force used falls into one of two categories: external force or hydrostatic energy. When used against a level surface, the liquid exercises equal force against all points of that surface. All points on an object’s surface are affected by vertical pressure when the object is thoroughly submerged in a liquid that’s in a state of equilibrium. This applied force is known as buoyancy, while the concept itself is known as Archimedes’ principle. Liquid acted on by hydrostatic force is then subject to hydrostatic pressure at the point of contact. These ideas are applied to the containers used by plumbing, wells, and fountains.
