The Source of Today's Wall Fountains

The Source of Today's Wall Fountains Himself a learned man, Pope Nicholas V led the Roman Catholic Church from 1397 till 1455 and was responsible for the translation of scores of ancient documents from their original Greek into Latin. He undertook the beautification of Rome to make it into the worthy seat of the Christian world. In 1453 the Pope commissioned the repairing of the Aqua Vergine, an historic Roman aqueduct which had carried fresh drinking water into the city from eight miles away. The ancient Roman custom of building an awe-inspiring commemorative fountain at the point where an aqueduct arrived, also known as a mostra, was resurrected by Nicholas V. At the bidding of the Pope, architect Leon Battista Alberti undertook the construction of a wall fountain in the spot where we now find the Trevi Fountain.Source Today's Wall Fountains 7483016668344997041.jpg The water which eventually provided the Trevi Fountain as well as the famed baroque fountains in the Piazza del Popolo and Piazza Navona flowed from the modified aqueduct which he had renovated.

The Main Characteristics of Classic Greek Statues

The Main Characteristics of Classic Greek Statues Up until the Archaic Greeks created the 1st freestanding sculpture, a phenomenal triumph, carvings had mainly been done in walls and pillars as reliefs. Most of the freestanding statues were of youthful, winsome male or female (kore) Greeks and are called kouros figures. The kouroi, viewed as by the Greeks to symbolize beauty, had one foot stretched out of a fixed forward-facing posture and the male statues were always nude, with a powerful, strong shape. The kouroi became life-sized beginning in 650 BC. Throughout the Archaic period, a great time of change, the Greeks were developing new types of government, expressions of art, and a larger understanding of people and cultures outside Greece. The Arcadian conflicts, the Spartan penetration of Samos, and other wars between city-states are good examples of the sorts of battles that occurred frequently, which is consistent with other times of historical change.
