A Chronicle of Outdoor Water Fountains

Chronicle Outdoor Water Fountains 48293036397067.jpg A Chronicle of Outdoor Water Fountains The translation of hundreds of classic Greek texts into Latin was commissioned by the learned Pope Nicholas V who ruled the Church in Rome from 1397 till 1455. He undertook the embellishment of Rome to turn it into the worthy capital of the Christian world. Beginning in 1453, the ruined ancient Roman aqueduct known as the Aqua Vergine which had brought fresh drinking water into the city from eight miles away, underwent restoration at the bidding of the Pope. The ancient Roman tradition of building an awe-inspiring commemorative fountain at the location where an aqueduct arrived, also known as a mostra, was resurrected by Nicholas V. At the behest of the Pope, architect Leon Battista Alberti began the construction of a wall fountain in the place where we now find the Trevi Fountain. The aqueduct he had refurbished included modifications and extensions which eventually enabled it to supply water to the Trevi Fountain as well as the famed baroque fountains in the Piazza del Popolo and the Piazza Navona.

Castles were more standard designs and often constructed on blustery hills, where their people devoted both time and space to exercising offense and defense, while monasteries were large stone buildings, regularly located in the widest, most fruitful hollows. The barren fortresses did not provide for the peaceful avocation of horticulture. Berkeley Castle, maybe the most pristine style of the early Anglo-Norman style of architecture, still exists now. It is said that the keep was created during William the Conqueror's time. An enormous terrace encompasses the building, serving as an obstacle to assailants attempting to dig under the castle walls. A scenic bowling green, covered in grass and surrounded by battlements clipped out of an ancient yew hedge, creates one of the terraces.
