The Influence of the Norman Invasion on Anglo-Saxon Garden Design

The Influence of the Norman Invasion on Anglo-Saxon Garden Design Anglo-Saxons felt extraordinary modifications to their daily lives in the latter half of the eleventh century due to the accession of the Normans. Architecture and gardening were skills that the Normans excelled in, trumping that of the Anglo-Saxons at the time of the occupation. But before focusing on home-life or having the occasion to think about domestic architecture or decoration, the Normans had to subjugate an entire population. Monasteries and castles served different functions, so while monasteries were large stone structures built in only the most productive, wide dales, castles were set upon blustery knolls where the people focused on learning offensive and defensive strategies. The serene practice of gardening was unlikely in these dreary bastions. Berkeley Castle, potentially the most uncorrupted style of the early Anglo-Norman style of architecture, still exists today. The keep is said to date from William the Conqueror's time. A monumental terrace serves as a discouraging factor to intruders who would try to mine the walls of the building.Influence Norman Invasion Anglo-Saxon Garden Design 595106157190953342.jpg On one of these parapets is a scenic bowling green covered in grass and surrounded by an aged hedge of yew that has been shaped into coarse battlements.

He was also a city designer, in addition to his abilities as a water fountain designer, and traces of his life's work are evident throughout the avenues of Rome. Bernini's father, a recognized Florentine sculptor, mentored his young son, and they ultimately transferred in Rome, to fully show their artwork in the form of community water fountains and water features. The young Bernini received compliments from Popes and relevant artists alike, and was an exceptional employee. Initially he was recognized for his sculpting skills. An authority in historical Greek engineering, he used this knowledge as a base and melded it seamlessly with Roman marble, most remarkably in the Vatican. Though he was influenced by many, Michelangelo had the most profound impact on him, both personally and professionally.
