From Where Did Water Features Originate?

From Where Did Water Features Originate? Hundreds of ancient Greek texts were translated into Latin under the auspices of the scholarly Pope Nicholas V, who ruled the Roman Catholic Church from 1397 to 1455. In order to make Rome deserving of being the capital of the Christian world, the Pope decided to embellish the beauty of the city. Restoration of the Acqua Vergine, a desolate Roman aqueduct which had transported fresh drinking water into the city from eight miles away, began in 1453 at the behest of the Pope. The ancient Roman custom of building an awe-inspiring commemorative fountain at the location where an aqueduct arrived, also known as a mostra, was revived by Nicholas V. The architect Leon Battista Alberti was commissioned by the Pope to build a wall fountain where we now see the Trevi Fountain. The aqueduct he had reconditioned included modifications and extensions which eventually enabled it to supply water to the Trevi Fountain as well as the renowned baroque fountains in the Piazza del Popolo and the Piazza Navona.

The Many Good Reasons to Include a Fountain

Many Good Reasons Include Fountain 0096154406461.jpg The Many Good Reasons to Include a Fountain The inclusion of a wall fountain or an outdoor garden fountain is an excellent way to embellish your yard or garden design. Modern-day artists and fountain builders alike use historical fountains and water features to shape their creations. As such, the impact of integrating one of these to your home decor bridges it to past times. The advantage of having a garden fountain goes beyond its beauty as it also appeals to birds and other wildlife, in addition to harmonizing the ecosystem with the water and moisture it emits into the atmosphere. For instance, irksome flying insects are usually deterred by the birds drawn to the fountain or birdbath.

Putting in a wall fountain is your best solution for a little patio area because a spouting or cascading fountain occupies too much space. Either a stand-alone fountain with an even back and an attached basin placed against a fence or a wall, or a wall-mounted kind which is self-contained and hangs on a wall, are some of the possibilities from which you can choose. A water feature can be added to an existing wall if you include some kind of fountain mask as well as a basin to gather the water below. It is best not to undertake this job on your own as skilled plumbers and masons are best suited to do this kind of work.

Anglo Saxon Landscapes During the Norman Conquest

Anglo Saxon Landscapes Norman Conquest 6608190499807.jpg Anglo Saxon Landscapes During the Norman Conquest Anglo-Saxons experienced incredible adjustments to their day-to-day lives in the latter half of the eleventh century due to the accession of the Normans. The Normans were much better than the Anglo-Saxons at architecture and horticulture when they came into power. But yet there was no time for home life, domestic design, and adornment until the Normans had conquered the whole region. Most often constructed upon windy summits, castles were straightforward constructs that enabled their occupants to devote time and space to offensive and defensive strategies, while monasteries were rambling stone buildings generally installed in only the most fecund, extensive valleys. The calm practice of gardening was unrealistic in these dismal bastions. Berkeley Castle is possibly the most complete model in existence at present of the early Anglo-Norman form of architecture. The keep is said to date from the time of William the Conqueror. A large terrace meant for strolling and as a way to stop attackers from mining below the walls runs around the building. On one of these parapets is a scenic bowling green covered in grass and enclosed by an aged hedge of yew that has been shaped into coarse battlements.
