Sculpture As a Staple of Vintage Art in Ancient Greece

Sculpture Staple Vintage Art Ancient Greece 143127141948366690.jpg Sculpture As a Staple of Vintage Art in Ancient Greece The primitive Greeks built the first freestanding statuary, an impressive achievement as most sculptures up until then had been reliefs cut into walls and pillars. Most of these freestanding sculptures were what is known as kouros figures, statues of young, attractive male or female (kore) Greeks. Considered by Greeks to represent beauty, the kouroi were formed into inflexible, forward facing positions with one foot outstretched, and the male statues were usually nude, well-developed, and athletic. Life-sized versions of the kouroi appeared beginning in 650 BC. The Archaic period was turbulent for the Greeks as they progressed into more sophisticated forms of federal government and art, and obtained more data about the peoples and societies outside of Greece. Nonetheless, the Greek civilization was not slowed down by these struggles.
